Neither fan was running when the car was on?
The radiator has two fans behind it. One is supposed to run whenever the engine is turning. The other is thermostatically controlled; there's a thermoswitch that kicks it on when the coolant reaches a certain temperature (stock temp is 89C, though you can get 82C switches). If neither fan was running you probably have an electrical problem with the fans. You might want to check the wires; the repair manual should explain it (I think the '85 MY is covered by Haynes publishing).
As for the loss of coolant, I'd say the most effective way to figure out what's happening is to fill up the coolant tank, put an old bedsheet underneath the engine area and let it sit overnight. Any leaks will tell you whereabouts to start looking for leaks. And if it doesn't leak overnight, you might have a bad water pump.
Good luck with it...
