The odometer/speedometer gauge cluster gets its input from a cable that runs down to the transmission. There isnt much on the transmission side that can fail. Maybe there is a gear inside the transmission that is failing, but I wouldnt know about that.
To get to the actual odometer, you can pull the top dash pad off. There are only 4 long screws that hold it in, and you will have a hell of a lot more room to work than with just the speaker covers off (that would be impossible).
