Curious insulation schemes (venting about venting)

Spent the better part of the day takin' care of car business. Had to manufacture a cover box of sorts for the set of three guages mounted center dash. Used one of those plastic console bucket numbers. Some careful sawing and drilling later and looks aces. Then I tackled afixing some additional insulation padding under the hood. Most important was the exhaust side. I already had that 20" x 60"? strip that runs horizontal midway beneath the hood. I was thrilled when I found that piece, cuz the flaking eggshell stock stuff had to go. But there was still quite a bit of heat hitting the hood from the turbo unit and exhaust manifold. I considered getting the whole hood padding unit found on later models. But that seemed overkill. I opted for a compromise between the two. The entire horizontal piece would stay, supplemented by almost half of the whole hood design, to help on the hot side. Some careful cutting later, some additional clip supports and it works great.

I'm wondering why SAAB created that thin strip at all, as it only keeps engine heat away from a relatively small part of the hood. The hottest area just above the turbo unit didn't have any insulation at all until the whole hood design was put to use. The best design to my thinking is one which mainly protects the hot zones, such as what I now have. Anything more is just additional weight.

While on the subject of heat: Some time back I replaced my stock 82 hood with a 1980 turbo hood. It fits fine, plus it has the additional venting just above the brake mstr cylinder, exactly equal in design and size to the opposite side cabin air intake vent all early 900's have. Why did SAAB discontinue that hood vent? It's perfect for venting hot air and creating air flow all around. When I park the car and place my hand over the left side vent, I can feel considerable heat rolling out. This is a good thing!
