Sounds like the classic head gasket replacement scenario, not a leaky valve cover gasket (because of the smoky exhaust and oily cylinder).
If you do the repair before the head warps, you'll probably not have to resurface the head. You should have it's "flatness" checked however.
You do not have to remove the engine to do this repair.
Also, this is one of the most common repairs on a Saab, and if you don't want to do it yourself, most Saab shops will be able to quote you a price from memory. I paid around $600 to have mine done a month ago.
