Supplier for 900 style engine stand (unique?)

Looked at a cool link once from here, some Euro shop which had a nice picture spread on an engine rebuild. Several photos therein showed a bizarre looking engine stand which appeared to be something like a horseshoe in shape, and which mounted somewhere to the sides of the block casting. Is this type engine stand necessary, or could the standard type generic flywheel/bellhousing mount stands work for both engine & trans?
FWIW, car is an 87 900T, 5 speed, looking forward to a winter "freshen up".
