Yup - brake light switch Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 9 Jul 2001 13:18:26 In Reply to: brake lights stay on, Ellen, Mon, 9 Jul 2001 13:09:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The brake light switch has been know to fail ON. You can wiggle the pedal, and sometimes that helps. There are occasions where the switch just gets out of adjustment.
The switch has a plunger that is pressed when your foot is off the pedal. When you press the pedal, the plunger is released, and that turns the brake lights on. If the switch has gotten pushed back some, the plunger won't be pressed in all the way with your foot off the pedal.
Push the driver's seat all the way back and crawl in. Check the pedal action. The switch is a long cylinder up above the pedal. If it looks like it could be moved closer to the pedal, try that.
Otherwise, just replace the switch - they're cheap, even from the dealer (I don't know anybody else that carrys them). Disconnect the two wires, and remove the old switch. I just put a screwdriver against the shaft and hit it with a hammer. After all, the switch is toast anyway. The new one is a push fit in. I've done it a couple of times. Not unusual.
Good luck!
