Bye Bye A/C

My A/C was working fine up until yesterday. I went for a long Sunday drive up to my grandparents' place. A/C was working fine on the way there. Got back in the car to head back, and it was blowing hot air. I looked at the sight glass with A/C running full blast. Saw some bubbles at first, but then the whole glass turned white, with a couple little black spots. Foam?
Since I bought the car, A/C has always cooled fine. When I ran it at lower settings, I would hear/feel clutch cycle on and off, but not when it was on full blast. Didn't hear clutch cycling after it stopped working yesterday, but did as normal beforehand.
Afraid maybe I created a leak in the system when fussing with alternator over the last week. If so, how can I find out? If no leak, is it still possible to get R12 recharge? I figure if it can be done anywhere, it's in TX.
Thanks all (alternator story forthcoming)
