Had the same problem on my 1985 900CD turbo auto. Found the car was dangerous when cold especially entering traffic. Improved greatly by attention to the warm up regulator (fuel pressure regulator mounted on thermostat housing) and checking timing. The local Saab mechanic here can tweek the warm up regulator by somehow placing washers of various thickness under the internal control arm. He says this is trial and error and checks what effects the changes have on fuel pressure with a gauge - has improved it so that it no longer is dangerous to venture into the traffic.
A new regulator here in Australia is many hundreds of dollars so worth a try to fiddle the old one if fuel pressure is the problem.
