Timing Chain Tensioner, Oil Passages : Experience Needed

88 Saab 900 Turbo SPG
The timing chain broke recently after only 30k miles on it. Obviously I want to take all steps possible from that ever happening again. Since the crank and cam sprockets look good I'm thinking the tensioner could have failed. It is the later (newer) style and only extended 1/2 way judging by the clean shiny area. I understand the oil pressure pushes the tensioner out, not just the spring. Looking for ideas here...What if that oil passage was blocked? The passage in the head is fine and I follow the passage into the block I can stick something down there several inches before it stops. Presumably the passage turns. This same passage in the head leads to the cam lubrication passages. Since the cams and hydraulic lifters are fine (they were quiet) I presume I'm getting oil. Does anyone know where the passage in the block goes to? Directly to the oil pump? Can I confirm the passage is ok?
As you can tell I'm hunting for ideas for why the chain broke. The bottom end looks ok. Guides look OK, almost no wear. I'm looking at the tensioner system for lack of other ideas. The tensioner itself has the tiniest little hole on the side for oil pressure. No bigger than a large pin. How can oil pressure and that little hole make enough pressure to push hard against the chain? Ideas...
