Ian, sounds too me like you might need some new tires. If you've had an aligment and wheels balanced (with no dented rims), I would guess your tires were the culprit.
I had Yokohamas on my previous 90 900T which still looked new, they had gone out of round and at highway speed the car would shake like crazy. Once I replaced them, smooth sailing.
