Here's the scoop:
Antifreeze/Coolant is primarily Ethylene Glycol, C6H6O2. Water is water.
Water has a specific heat roughly twice that of E.G. This means that water is much more effective at absorbing heat energy without raising its temperature.
E.G. on the other hand has a much lower freezing point. Thus the name "antifreeze". Also, it's presence in an automobile engine helps to discourage electrochemical corrosion of the internal metal parts. Water tends to encourage such corrosion. Finally, it has a slightly higher boiling temperature than water.
In a car, you don't want your antifreeze/coolant to freeze, boil, or corrode the insides. So you put a mix of the two in there. If you live in a cold place, maybe put more E.G. in to discourage freezing. If you live in a hot place, maybe put more water in to help cool engine better. Too much water however will increase the likelyhood of corrosion. However, you can eliminate that problem by using distilled water.
Now that you have the background, here's the bottom line. If you're just adding a little bit, and it's hot out (it is summer, after all), add pure water to top off. If you're really anal, add distilled water. But if it's gonna get cold later on in the year, make sure you've got enough E.G. in there by the time winter rolls around. If you want to add and not worry about it again, mix 50/50 and add the mix. Adding pure E.G. is also an option, but it will diminish the cooling capacity of your system, and it costs more, so why? Maybe if you want extra corrosion protection and have no overheating concerns.
