The boy you're speaking of was attacked in Pensacola, which is on the Gulf coast far west of here (almost in Mississippi). Vero Beach is down the Atlantic Coastline towards Miami. Very few shark attacks there considering the number of people in the water every day. People have much more to fear from lightning in Florida than sharks.
I know quite a bit about sharks, having been around them on many occasions. My wife and I are both certified advanced scuba divers.
Sharks generally don't attack people unless they mistake them for food. This happens to surfers paddling out (from below they look like seals) and to swimmers who swim in murky or cloudy water, particularly at dawn or dusk. The unfortunate boy in the news was in an area where the sand was kicked up and his attack happened at around 8pm. Shouldn't have been in the water.
Sharks attacking scuba divers is nearly unheard of, except in the cases of divers who are trying to feed them.
Anyway, thanks for the warning, John, but I wasn't planning on going swimming at the convention. I've got an inground pool heated with a solar array at home here and I'm in it for 9 months out of the year -- the only time I go into the ocean any more is with scuba gear.
Now, if you want to talk about GATORS.... :-D
