What's the oil under the gas tank?

Just picked up an '88 base model last week. After a fairly lengthy trip, I parked it in my driveway and noticed a puddle under the back of the car the next day. I figured I had a gas leak, but after looking underneath, I noticed what appeared to be a breather tube coming out from the gas tank. That area to the rear edge of the gas tank was oily. After putting my finger in the puddle, the oil felt like possibly brake fluid or gear oil. How is this possible?
By the way, after having gone through quite a few cars during the past few years ('90 turbo, '99 Viggen, '00 GTI, Subaru SVX, and now back to a 900), I'm feeling that the old 900's are some of the best things the automotive world has produced. I just didn't get the feeling of unflappable security and contact with the road in the others. The newer Saabs feel wallowy in comparison. Hopefully, the upcoming 9-3 replacement will be better.
So now that I've come home, so to speak, I'll probably always try to keep a classic 900 in stock. I'm going to upgrade what I have, but will probably eventually keep my eye out for the newest, cherriest one I can find.
Back on board,
Mike Z.
