I have an '88 black SPG.

Frankly doesn't really matter whether it's a SPG or any other car...

The most important thing is to bring it to a saab shop and have them check it out, including a compression test.

Stuff you can due to rule it out (my view is that you should be trying to rule out the car and not persuade yourself that it's okay):

Check that upon modest to hard acceleration that the car is smooth and not shuddering (shudder = inner drivers = $$)

Brakes work well?

Turbo spools to orange/red mark?

Idle is smooth?

Start the car and get out and watch the exhaust for a full minute and see if any smoke comes out. if so, turbo issues are in the future.

Looks for fluid leaks. Listen for transmission noises.

How's the ac? Do the windows operate smoothly? How about the sunroof?

Condition of the exterior and interior? Rust on the bottom of the doors or the wheel well arches?

Check the air filter (is it completely filthy?).

Seller have service records?

This should get you started, but make sure to bring it to a mechanic.

BTW, the steering issue could be the rack failing or it could be the tires skipping or hitting the fender flares.....
