Well that is really odd how ALL FOUR speakers quit. The wires that go down the firewall are for the rear speakers. They run underneath the console thing that houses the EQ. Then they go directly between the drivers seat and floor console / shifter console and under the backseat and up over the gas tank, etc.
There is no reason why the front speakers should be quitting out if the CD player is good. Perhaps the CD player is losing power because of a bad wire connection and it keeps enough to stay on but not enough power for the speakers? That is very odd how the speakers all quit at once, and you have tried more than one CD player. Perhaps you could rig up a battery (like a few AAs from Radioshack) to provide the correct voltage (5 volts I think?) to the CD player and speakers (should be a simple wiring job at the back of the CD player or harness) and bypass the car's power supply.
Also, if one of the speakers is shorting/grounding out on the frame somewhere, that oculd be zapping all the power from the speakers. Perhaps you should unplug one speaker at a time to see if that eliminates a short of one of the speakers (probably one of the rear ones at this point).
Also, dont forget that it is common for the wiring harness about the catalytic converter to get melted from a bad heat shield and cause problems like this. Happened to me!!
