The water-jacketed turbo does have an additional input and output for coolant. For your year car you'd also have to plumb into the coolant system to get flow through the 'new' turbo.
The water-jacketed turbo is better than the earlier ones without a water jacket because the coolant flow helps prevent oil coking after shutdown. But frankly, if you use good quality oil, change it regularly, and avoid shutting the car down immediately after very hard driving, you should be fine. The turbo in my '86 (no water jacket) was in fine shape at 162K miles. Of course, that doesn't help you with what you bought. Sorry.
