300 miles/ on full tank

Hi,
have an 89 900 automatic non turbo. My odometer stopped working since I've had the car, but a few weeks back, I banged on the dash a few times (cause darn check engine light came on) and the odometer started working.
Anyways, now I know how the mpg I'm getting. On a full tank of gas, I get around 300 miles before I'm almost empty. If I remember correctly, the 900's hold 19 gallons right? That would only give me about 16 mpg.
I'm no mechanic and was hoping someone can give me an idea on why I would get such lousy gas mileage and some obvious places to look. The car seems to be in good shape, runs strong, and gets regular oil changes. Last tune-up was 6+ months ago but w/ generic cap/rotor parts. Could a basic tune-up (spark plug, distributor cap w/ saab parts) help the mpg? The check engine light comes on once in a while but normally turns off when I restart and will reappear weeks later usually when I accelerate hard but comes on so rarely, that I haven't bothered troubleshooting. thanks everyone
