I am running a JL 10" in a sealed enclosure, being fed by a PPI 6 channel amp, with the 5th and 6th channel bridged into the sub. If you have some giant bandpass box with a basic MTX 10" in it (depends what series MTX, of course) then yeah, it's gonna be boomy. My JL is super tight, 'cause it is built correctly (the box matches the speaker, and the speaker is, well, JL!). There are plenty of good speakers out there, though for true sounds replication and not just base-boom, you're gonna have to spend some decent bux. Think JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, Xtreme Orions, etc. Say no to Sony, Pioneer, MTX (except their high end stuff), Bazookas, etc.
Tell the people at your audio shop what you are looking for and they'll make it right.
Mike
