About the driveshafts : I unbolted both (upper and lower) balljoints
and pulled them outwards by the bolt spacing width so I could re-insert
one bolt; i.e., through the outer bracket holes and the inner ball joint
hole.gave me plenty of clearance.
My shifter linkage was a problem too. There's a tapered pind that you
merely "tap" on and it gracefully plinks out. I wailed on that sucker
until I thought I'd knock the car off the jackstands : no dice. So I
took off the little hose-clamp-looking thingie from the linkage, then went inside and uprooted the shifter mechanism (not a super pleasant job, but I had done this on my driving car the week before -- ignition switch bit it.)
When I pulled oput the shifter, the linkage came apart and gave me just enough clearance to pull the engine.
I couldnt get the pwr steering pump completely off. There was this one little hose clamp pointing in EXACTLY the wrong direction. And the car
was so engrimed that I didn't want to even think about where the other
end went : I didn't want to get that stuff in my P/S lines. So I sort of
wiggled the pump around so that was resting on something (the rack ?) and
lifted the engine very slowly (1 cm at a time, it seemed) and made sure
the pump didn't get smushed. All worked out okay.
About the mess : As they used to say "You ain't NEVER lyin'!" But (maybe since this was only partly visible, and then only from the alley) the neighbors seemed to react fairly positively. One lady who walks her dog
couldn't believe I was actually doing it all by myself : "But it looks so heavy !" Another guy from down the block came by and introduced himself:
Said he's been driving Saabs for 28 years; said he just recognised the
engine as he was passing by. We talked for an hour.
Nonetheless, I'm glad the major grime is all gone. (Don't wanna think
about what's still under the hood.)
Cheers,
Jeff
