My thoughts are that all car sound systems and live music sound horrible, compared alongside a good set of headphones and a clean amplifier. Volume goes a long way toward masking flaws. A clean amp (low s/n distortion ratio) producing ample power (50 watts per channel max is fine for a car) coupled with speakers that are rated for that amp will sound good, no matter the manufacturer. I recently bought a set of replaceament speakers for the front dash at an electronics supply house. Generic manufacture, 50 watt rating, $10 dollars each. They kick butt. Coupled with the stock SAAB 6x9 speakers in the rear - my ears ring and I disturb passers by when I crank it up. Perfect. The only difference between speakers I notice is that because of their respective designs, some will emphasize a set range of audio frequencies more than another design. At that point it's just a matter of personal taste. Some folks like booming bass, some like treble. I suppose in general that another $1000+ invested into a sound system would improve on the experience somewhat, but I prefer spending that money elsewhere. Like a water injection system and a larger tranny pinion bearing.
