OK, this is one of those things where I almost feel, "it ain't broke, so don't fix it" but... My a/c works fine in my old 86, which is a 5 spd 16v turbo. Deal is, 1. When I'm cruising above 45-50mph, and the a/c cycles on, what I think is the a/c belt makes a "chirp" sound that will fairly quickly go away - it's only momentary, and I notice that w/ a little throttle modulation I can make it less noisy. Belts seem plenty tight, and from prior experience w/ other makes & alternator bearings, too tight can be a bad thing. So is it a worn compressor bearing? A bad belt? Something I don't know about?
2. When I come to an abrupt stop in the SAAB w/ a/c on, it stalls 50% of the time. Seems like the a/c "load" is'nt being compensated for by an increased engine rpm - know what I mean? This engine idles fairly well for an original 175k motor, and I think the vacuum lines are good - replaced some - but I'm wondering if I should take a look at idle speed adjustments and tune-up specs in general. What do you think?
3. As long as the car has these tendencies, my wife won't drive it very often. Maybe I should do nothing? ;)
