Chasing the rattling in my cousin's '88 spg revealed that over the years,
the door seals relax and no longer apply enough back force against the door latches. Repositioning the striker plates inward so that seal pressure is restored eliminates most clunking from the doors. The same applies to readjusting the rear hatch latch. The hatch door also has rubber bumpers that twist in or out to vary the seal and latch pressure when the hatch is closed. The bumpers control seal loading and the latch position determines proper latch operation.
Saabs are built very strong and the body stucture is able to withstand stresses that would deform most other cars. Body shops often have difficulty repairing a bent Saab hit hard enough during a collision because of the great forces often required while attempting to undue the damage.
