Talking about my 82T sedan that should have been scrapped, and would have been had I not given it another chance at life. As far as how much money I've put into this thing since the new year when I bought it, I'd say close to $1000. Mostly in parts, mostly salvaged. All the work I've done myself, mostly on weekends. I recently finished a fix on the starter bug that had me frustrated. I replaced a dying one two weeks ago, which tested ok before I reattached all the disassembled parts, but then when it was all put back together I found that the new one (yes, from a salvaged car, but overhauled) also had a problem. A week later I again pulled that starter and discovered that the problem was all mine - I had incorrectly installed the solenoid control arm. Now it works fine. Total time for that re-repair: 4 hours. I've been rewarded with all the time spent by having a very fine running machine, with a turbo that pushes the limit of it's highest stock boost range. Gas milage is good, brakes are doing fine, the tranny is holding up quite well for 175k miles, all electric systems are intact, the dash uncracked. Just a few rinky dink things left. Maybe a new interior to go with the recent quality paint job. All in all, it was well worth the expence and effort, and I look forward to more repairs and modifications as time and money permit.

As far as taking advantage of salvaged cars as an alternative to expensive parts replacement for your 1990 900, I've never seen any SAAB newer than 1989 sitting in the parts yards. I do know there are yards that specialize in newer models, but I have no need to visit those yards, so I can't say how frequently you'll find a SAAB. I do know that 1982 - 1986 are the most frequent years for SAAB seen in the yards I visit. No doubt in another 3 to 5 years the newer models will be showing up with more regularity.
