Need help with clutch job, rear engine block cover

Hi all,
So I'm attempting to replace my clutch and all the seals around it. Having a problem though. Can't get the rear engine seal in properly(no, I don't have the Saab special tool...ugh!)
I talked to my mechanic, he suggested taking off the rear engine block cover, seat the seal properly, and just use anerobic 518 instead of a new cover gasket. Seems like the cover leaks anyway, hard to tell since I just had the headgasket done so it may have come from there.
Anyone have any input on this? I'm just afraid of putting it back together and making any leaks worse!
