It was designed for various 1950 Studebaker products which had lots of torque. The problem is that the ratios are totally inappropriate for a reving little engine like a SAAB 2 liter. You have basically what should be 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear of a 5-speed, but no 1st or 5th, so there's no low gear to get a good standing start launch in any kind of performance test. The planetary ratios are not changeable without spending money by the truckload, and there isn't much you can do about the transfer chain ratios either.
For commuting like my daughter does, it's ok, because she only has to make a full stop twice and average speed is about 50, so she doesn't really need a 1st or 5th, but for performance driving, there's no hope.
