My '87 SPG blew that hose a few months ago on a cold rainy day. A few weeks later I found a hole in the radiator.
One thing to consider is the age of that hose. Another thing might be that you have a leak elsewhere in the cooling system allowing your coolant to boil. Keep in mind it's quite possible for this leak to be small enough that you don't notice coolant loss.
When driving at highways speeds (not in traffic) where does your gauge sit? center or below center? Before I replaced my radiator, mine was centered, and I didn't consider it to be running hot, but with a new radiator it's usually a bit below center at highway speed.
