I generally don't use soap on the cloth top. Simply rinse with water and wipe with the wet sponge prior to soaping down the rest of the car. One way to maintain the top is to NOT run the car through an automatic car wash. Mine has never seen a cash wash and my top looks great. I car also doesn't see winters or salt. Using the 3 piece plastic boot cover helps to avoid "rub" of the top pieces at high speed driving. You can use the 3M treatment for added water repellency, but it's not really needed.
