I actually rebuilt my 82 900s tranny about 9 years ago. It needed a pinion bearing and with only Haynes!!! I took it apart, replaced the pinion at S&S in New Baltimore, VA (the owner correctly diagnosed the pinion before he got the car out of his parking lot). I replaced a couple of worn gears, but didn't spend more than a few hundred dollars as I remember... Only mistake I made was not being VERY careful in spacers on final assembly, so it has a tendency to slip out of 1st and reverse. As long as I'm careful this isn't critical enough to take it apart again.
Only cost me once when I accidentally tried to go back to reverse while moving and the lever that pushes the reverse gear lost it's tooth. Fixed that by just opening the side of the gearbox, and the part from my new SAAB mechanic expert in Vermont.
I'm not really qualified to do this, just too dumb to not tackle jobs I shouldn't!
This took about two weeks of working evenings in a friend's garage while he was out of town with a chain winch wrapped around 4x4s in the ceiling.
