confirm location of trans. dipstick Posted by Ken [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Ok, so do I have this right? The transmission dipstick on a 1991 900 5sp. manual is essentially the huge nut at the base of the right (passenger) side of the engine, just to the forward edge of the exhaust manifold? Who the hell designed that? Anyway, if I haven't changed it in approx. 35k (my mechanic said "it shouldn't really get changed because it's a sealed system"), is it possible that really old trans. oil could be causing my recent problem - gritty shifts with resistance and an occasional jam in neutral or a refusal to go into 1st or 2nd? If changing my trans. oil will eliminate a big variable (and cost of taking it to a mechanic who's liable to just tell me I need a new trans.), then I'm headed to a gas station first thing in the morning.
Another unrelated question- my antifreeze plastic tank was at the min. line when the engine was cold. Does that mean I need to fill it up to max, or are you supposed to check it when it's hot?
Thanks,
Ken
