Ways to turn the engine over -
This works pretty well - clean the area around the spark plugs, then remove them. Cover the area with a towel (this is to keep crap from falling into the cylinders). Now, turn any available accessory. I've had good luck with using a tool on the alternator pulley. By removing the plugs you eliminate the resistance of engine compression. Unless your belts are really loose, you should be able to turn the engine. I'd recommend sticking a big wrench on the main pulley bolt, but it's a pain to get to on a 900.
Yes, the 'window' is a massive pain to see. I don't remove hoses, but I do tie them out of the way with string. It looks funny, but it works.
As to the mark - face it, +/- 1 degree is pretty decent. I usually put a small daub of nail polish on the flywheel. Let it dry before you start the car! Since it's hard to see the window, anything you can do to make the mark visible helps. It also helps to highlight the pointer/alignment line.
I've never worried about which way to turn the distributor - I just turn it until the marks line up - if you turn the distributor the wrong way, you'll see the mark going the wrong way - pretty self-correcting. I assume you're using a timing light for this, as you can't do it statically with an electronic ignition.
As to how often, I'd say 'that depends'. I check the timing about once a year, and I never need to adjust it more than about every 2 or 3. I don't think it has that much to do with 'stretching' timing chains. The distributor is held in place with a pressure clamp, and over time and vibration the distributor is going to creep a little. So I would do the timing, and then check it again in a week or so. Just to make sure that you tightened the distributor clamp properly. Then check it every 6 months or so to get comfortable with it.
