To amplify on the other's comments-
Chances are it is the alternator brushes. The brushes are built into the voltage regulator. Yes, you can replace just the brushes, but it requires soldering. I can solder, and I never bother - I just replace the whole voltage regualtor.

Go to most any autoparts store and buy a Voltage Regulator for your car. It should look like a diamond-shaped device with two little carbon dohickeys sticking down and out from it. I think I paid $50 last time. Bosch makes a nice one.

Installation is REALLY easy. First, remove the NEGATIVE clamp from the battery. This is a safety precaution. Make sure you don't hit both the positive and negative posts at the same time - cover the positive post with a rag or something if you're not sure.

Now, look at the back of the alternator. You'll see a diamond-shaped device (the back of the alternator faces the front of the car.) It's held on with two bolts. Undo the bolts, and take the old one out. Stick the new one in. It's pretty obvious how it goes in, and there are not tricks here. Tighten the bolts down, and reconnect the battery clamp. You should be fine.

There is a thin wire (usually yellow) going to the back of the alternator. Make sure it's still connected when you're done.

As the others have noted, with the battery light on, the battery isn't charging. Driving the car this way will kill the battery. How long depends on the load - headlights, brakelights, all take a toll. Depending on the state of your battery (and it's pretty tired now), maybe 10 or 15 minutes with headlights and brakelights off. And if you completely discharge the battery, you will greatly reduce it's life. So have someone give you a ride to the autoparts store.
