After reading the many excellent posts on engine rattles, I enlisted the aid of my brother (and his stethoscope) and set about hunting down an annoying rattle coming from (as it turns out) the engine compartment.

This rattle is RPM dependent, that is it occurs everytime the RPM's passthrough 3K (this is with, and without, engine under load.

In my case it turned out to be the AC Idler pulley (although I can readily understand how the cat, or cat heat shield, could cause a rattle as it resonated in harmony with the engine at certain RPM's).

My question:

In the "SAAB from hell" posting from 7 Aug, there was advice given to Peter who had a "chirp" coming from his AC unit. The poster, burlyb, stated that the chances were the idler pulley bearings are shot and that it was an easy $17 fix.

Can anybody elaborate on this fix or point me to a reference source ?
