hello,
my 1989 900T with 184,700 miles did the same thing.
i changed the trans. oil, which didnt do much, but is something you should do.
the kick down cable can be adjusted, as can the bands in the transmission.
there is also a govinor which can get sticky and should be cleaned if you are having laggy shift.
i would recommend that your mechanic do this, as there is a special tool to adjust the bands.
this should help, but if not, then there isnt much to do.
the tranny you are talking of should shift into 3rd around 45mph. this is kind of late, and your mechanic CAN adjust your trans (the bands/kickdown) to shift earlier, like 30 or 35mph. DO NOT DO THIS, though, as it will shorten the life of your trans.
cheers!!
