Well...

This is a relatively early FWD design, before real rules had been developed as to the best way to handle the system, and from the days when saab was really creating odd cars. I am not sure exactly why this system was chosen, but my literature pertaining to the 99 states that this design places the clutch in a better position for cooling, but that seems to be a side benefit. The earlier saab design from the 95/96 places the engine front to back ahead of the transmission, as is normal for rear drive cars. The new 99 design utilized a new motor which was triumph design, presumably the engine was easier to adapt to back front layout than side to side layout as is common today. In the late sixties there were many designs put in use to handle FWD, ranging from the mini with transverse, to GM, which placed the engine and transmission side by side, turning the drive from the engine 180 degrees to get to the transmission. audi placed the motor ahead of a foreward mounted transmission.... The idea was that FWD wouldnt work well on a larger car, and different makers came up with different methods of getting the same thing done in a space-efficient manner.... Nowadays we seem to have mostly settled on one design.
