It's unlikely to be a tripod bearing. The tripod bearings fit into the inner drivers, which is the cup-like hub on the sides of the transmissions that turn the axles. The bearings themselves don't rotate significantly as the axle turns, they just serve as a universal joint.
The whine is produced in most cases by a failing pinion bearing. What happens is that the bearing race and sometimes the rollers too, become pitted and start to fall apart. As pitting increases, the rate at which the bearing fails accelerates. When you start to hear the whine, the pitting is well advanced.
I would definitely not attempt the trip unless you fancy the excitement of a breakdown in the middle of nowhere and have lots of $$ to throw away. Using Redline MTL or any other different lubricants won't do anything about the damage already done, and won't do much to prevent further damage. The bearing has ALREADY failed. If you drive it further you're just waiting for additional parts to be damaged and cost you more $$$.
If you get it fixed now, you could get by with only a few hundred $$ for the transmission repair plus the cost of R&R, which can be considerable ($500 - $1000). If you continue to drive it, you'll be looking at a complete rebuild or the purchase of a rebuilt transmission (~$1500) plus the cost of R&R.
