Well you are in in Boston, so to not have heat in the winter is probably not an option. However you CAN do what I did for a temporary fix:
There are two hoses that go into the valve from the engine side; 1 that flows from the engine, and another that flows *to* the engine.
All you needd to do is connect those two hoses together, which just bypasses your heater core. This bypasses the valve altogether. I went to the the local auto store and bought a "U" shaped hose (I forget the diameter 1/2", maybe 5/8") ,some hose couplers, and some hose clamps, and hooked the two hoses together.
The reason you need the "U" shaped hose, is that the existing hoses will bend too much and pinch off the flow of coolant if you just try to couple them by themselves...
