Well, you could get lucky.
I bought an '87 900 8v with 200k on the odometer for my son to drive during his first winter. It had some whine in 4th gear, popped out of third sometimes at no-load conditions and had a dry dipstick (bad o'ring and seal at speedo cable connection to tranny). Fully expected to change tranny but, drained the oil (yours could be gear lube or oil) filled with fresh 10w30 and a dose of prolong. Today the whine is still there,no worse, it rarely comes out of 3rd, and pops out of reverse if one is not careful. BUT....this is 65k miles later!
You will want to drain it and determine what fluid, they oilmight smell bad but if it is gear lube it will be thicker and have a distinctive sulfur smell. Refill with same. Good luck!
