i bought a beautiful 87 900T with 265000 mi this past january. one owner, meticulous maintenance. well the very day i bought it i was parked on a clean driveway and noticed oil drops. i drove like this for another 3500 miles. at some point she develoed a terrible squeal and smell of burning rubber. i wish it had been from my screaming tires, but alas it was my front crank seal aka harmonic balancer. the oil pump seal deteriorates, allowing oil to escape, this oil then breaks down the rubber in the center of the balancer. you REALLY want to fix this, because as that rubber brraks down, eventually it will let go and your harmonic balancer COULD go flying off. you can purchase said balancer from sobstory for less than $70. labor will be around $200 or so. also you should replace o ring and other seals and such while they are under there. after this service, my car leaked no more!!
