Rear brake piston retraction

Well, I'm part of the way through replacing my rear brake pads. I can't get the pistons to retract back into the calipers. I tried removing the plug and backing off of the adjusting screw, but even after this, the pistons are stuck. I don't think they are frozen - they just aren't retracting. I have applied a significant amount of force to the pistons (I tried using a puller to push them back in). The problem is on both the left and right rear calipers. Any thoughts? How about stepping on the pedal while the caliper is off to "break" free the pistons? I did remove the cap on the brake fluid reservoir, and I disconnected the e-brake lines at the calipers. I'd appreciate any advice.
