this problem is usually caused by one of two things..either (and most likely) a failing ignitiong control module or a failing hall sensor. more than likely it is the icm since this is what controls and sends the signal via an amplifier to the tachometer. i had the same problem and it was the icm..this is a cheap part to purchase from sobstory...about $35 i think.
