I've used wood before, but it always compresses too much and gets all crunched up. My favorite is to use the steel wedges real men use to split wood. You can get them at any hardware store, and when slipped under the A-arm, they adjust to the size of the opening. They are also metal, so they don't compress. I use two, one under the front arm, one under the back.
