Lets say you have a big exhaust fan that blows air out of a duct in the roof of a building. Then there's a flap in the duct that you can close off during the winter (fan off) so you don't lose heat. Imagine that you turn the fan on full blast, then someone closes the flap accidently. The motor gets a huge load because the air has nowhere to go due to the flap being closed. Eventually, this could burn the motor up. The turbo output works the same way. The turbo gets going full blast sending air to the motor. Then, when you let off the throttle, the throttle plate closes to block the air flow. The sudden blockage puts a strain on the turbo compressor and forces it to slow down really fast. This not only puts extra stress on the turbo, it causes more turbo lag because now it has to spin up from standsill again. The bypass valve is there to give an alternate route for the air so there is no sudden stopping of the airflow. When the throttle plate closes, the bypass valve opens. The air goes thru the bypass valve and around to the intake side of the turbo. That creates a big circle for the air to travel in until the bypass valve closes (throttle plate opens) and air flow goes back into the engine.
