85Saab 900 ~240K miles, 8-valve. Excellent condition, never a problem and HIGHLY reliable for last 16 years until now... (?)
Problem:
I love this car but I don't like having a maximum speed set on it. On highway, 5th speed, when I reach 65mph...all is fine. It's when it accelerates to ~66mph that the rpm gage falls to zero and I've got loss of power. Before doing the below changes the situation was bad...and I could only start the car by shifting to 4th or even 3rd to restart it.
Since the below changes...in which the car overall (idle, running, acceleration) responds A LOT better, I still get an occasional "burp" at this 66mph boundary. It's repeatable every time I accelerate to this speed however once the needle (and power) dropping to zero rpm it does quickly return back to the previous ~3000rpm. The best way to describe it is by a short burst of total power loss (engine cuts out for a second but returns).
The same problem occurs with fourth gear...but it's at a different speed....I think ~40mph range. Here also, it's repeatable and occurs at the same speed boundary.
Changing the air filter changed the sound of the running motor significantly. I should mention that it was (several) years since I changed it...I know...but I was dreading it and kept postponing it. It was unrecognizable :) SP and oil/filter however are changed probably too often.
Attempts to fixabove problem by replacing:
* changed Spark Plugs
* used Techron injection cleaner (first time ANY
additive was used on this car)
* changed air filter
* ignition control unit
* checked vacuum hose connections
* fuel filter
By the way...what is: (can't find descriptions of these in Haynes)
(1) the module connected on same bracket holding the fuel filter in place? It's a black module (filter, switch?) with what appears to be vacuum hoses as input and output.
(2) the module to the left of the ignition control unit? This module also appears to have only vacuum hoses as inputs and output but one port is void of a hose...hmmm...and I'm wondering why.
Thanks much...
