After lots of hints, suggestions and chiding from GregD. I think I've
got the tranny put together *right*. Greg, I did take your advice and
(once again) tore her down and replaced the pinion bearings. In the
course of battle, I had been having doubts and figured I'd avoid
compilications if I didn't mess w/ the old pinion bearings. What had
seemed like a good idea at first later began to seem foolish. Particularly
when Greg pointed out that it was foolish. So the last rebuild went
pretty smoothly, just a matter of hours (less than 24, anyway!).
My biggest challenge was removing the old pinion bearing, the one that
abuts the pinion gear. I couldn't find any way to grip the inner race to
force it off; the outer race and rollers came off during my first
ham-fisted attempts w/ a hammer and drift. I ended up putting the shaft
in a lathe and carving the bearing race away.
My advice to anyone who wants to try a rebuild (and I do think it's a worthwhile project for those who are motivated) whould be to bring the output shaft to a tranny shop for the bearing replacement. All the
other steps were pretty accessible w/ standard tools plus an assortment
of pipe and a gear puller. For the pinion bearing replacement, I found
a hydraulic press to be essential.
So anyway, the tranny feels smooth, shifts into all 5+R gears, has all
new gaskets and seals, and awaits an engine to be bolted on. Meanwhile
my block and cylinder head sit idly on the bench of my local auto machine
shop.....
