I would check two things:
1. Check the spark plug wires. Faulty wires can cause a strange idle, and poor low-end performance (which would trigger the check engine light, BTW). A friend of mine's Miata had the same symptoms and new wires cured it immediately.
2. Check the AMM. Same story here...
If you have the original plug wires at ~100k, I would start here. The stock Bougicords are pretty high quality, but I wouldn't expect 100k out of 'em. Besides, $50 for a set of IPS's Kingborne or $75 for a set of Magnecors is cheaper than a $150 rebuilt AMM... :)
None of this has anything to do with the A/C... and probably the symptoms are unrelated. I never goof around with a/c - I just rip it out of all my Saabs. I'm sure someone else has more experience with working ones than I do... :)
