Some additional stuff Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Emergency Kit, what do you bring in your trunk., Jeff Cunningham, Tue, 28 Aug 2001 13:28:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In addition to what you carry:
--Small roll of picture hanging wire (braided wire) -hanging up exhaust pipes, cinching down batteries, etc.
--Unopend can of brake fluid
--Serpentine belt
--replacement headlight & brake light bulbs
--DUCT TAPE!! DUCT TAPE!!
--Really cheap and small ($10 at Radio Shack) analog volt-ohm meter
--Even more spare fuses
--Paper Towels
--Big(33 gal) garbage bags
--A few pairs of rubber goves
--Short length of pipe to slide over lug wrench
I also have an old set of coveralls. Just in case I need to crawl under the car. But the big garbage bags work well in a pinch. I also keep some rubber gloves in the car. Perfect for some quick dirty work where you won't be able to de-grease your paws afterward. The plastic bags are also good for wrapping around your arm so you don't get your shirt dirty.
I always carry a spare serpentine belt. It's usually just the last one I took off, as long as it doesn't look too bad. I figure every autoparts store won't carry them, and if I can get the car to a service station, I could at least have the old one put on to get me home.
I carry a short length of pipe (18 inches) to slip over the lug wrench. Sometimes lug nuts can get overtorqued, especially if a shop installs a tire. My wife was stranded with a flat tire because she wasn't big/strong enough to loosen the lugbolt because the shop had overtorqued them. With an 18" helper, you can at least stand on it.
I keep the jumper cables and plastic bags in the well of the spare tire. I keep everything else in a Rubbermaid box. Rubbermaid makes a tall, narrow box that *just* fits under the cover in the trunk. Not only does it keep everything in one place, but it can easily be grabbed and moved to another car in a pinch. And in one unfortunate circumstance, my bottle of motor oil ruptured, so the container kept the car clean (but the contents were a mess!)
