Lyle,
Just fixed an engine "rattle" on my 1990 900s (126,000 mi). Mine would "rattle/resonate" each time the engine reved to about 2500 rpm.
I also took mine to the Saab dealer (who I trust) for a diagnosis. He said "not timing chain, not compressor, water pumps don't normally fail/sound like this, could be A/C Idler pulley". His opinion was it wasn't symptomatic of a problem leading up to a sudden failure.
CAVEAT: In my case it turned out he was right. I add this caveat because it was difficult to pin point this noise - it sounded like a rattle that a heat shield, cat or exhaust would make.
Drove the car several weeks till my brother could help me put a stethoscope under the engine. We still could'nt be SURE of the source because the rattle only translated to an "ear splitting noise" in his steth when he (carefully) placed it on the pully mounting bolt.
Bottom line, I ordered a new AC Idler pulley from SobStory. Cost $28.00 (CAVEAT it's not an OEM part, but others on this board have used them and that's good enough for me). Installed the pulley the next day and - NO MORE RATTLE.
Hope this helps
Good Luck
