I'd guess that it's one of 2 things:
Either the brushes on the voltage regulator wore to the point that they weren't allowing enough current to pass out of the alternator to charge the battery and operate the electrical asscssories
or
The ground cable from the alternator isn't making a good connection.
My experience with this was similar: car died while I was running lights, radio, and wipers in a heavy rainstorm. Just before it died, it was running roughly and the radio fuzzed in and out. Turned out that the brushes on the voltage regulator wore down too far. Replaced the regulator and it ran fine for a long time.
