Was driving this morning and after a red light, when accelerating, my car sounded like a Harley Davidson. I actually looked around for a biker until I realized it was my little Saab.

I pulled over and looked underneath and the exhaust pipe up front where it goes from a double pipe to one pipe broke in half and was dangling near the ground.

I tied a rope to hold it and drove to a nearby Saab indie shop. The header pipe is quoted $135 + $5 gasket flange + $60 1 hour labor. Total $205.
My question is, what would cause this header pipe to break in two? I was driving normally and all of a sudden... However I did notice my Saab a little noisy just before this occured. A friend said the pipe must have gotten really hot, and if there was a small hole there, the temperature could have made it fall off. Has anyone else had this happen?

Also, probably a reasonable price to have fixed, but just wanted to check with you guys. thanks for all replies.
