Hi, John

The fix for your problem is probably mechanically simple, but the trick is getting in there to work on it. It's cramped and difficult to get under there, which makes the fix Not-So-Simple.

Start out by removing the driver's seat. Four nuts hold it on, plus a spring to the slide-release handle, and you'll have to unplug the seat heater connector. I usually kneel next to the car and reach under from the front and rear of the seat to get the 13mm nuts off. You can unhook the spring and heater connector by reaching in from the front. Then you can just lift out the seat. I put an old pillow down in its place so I can lay on my back there without getting gouged by the seat rail hardware.

Next you'll need to get your head down there by the brake pedal. I do this by laying on my back with my feet up on the back seat... it's like the launch position for an Apollo astronaut. Great fun, folding yourself in there. It's nice to have someone standing by to get tools and things for you so you don't have to keep climbing in and out of there while you work.

There's a plastic duct for the heater in your way, held up by a single Torx head bolt. Remove the bolt and then you can bend the duct down out of the way. I usually wedge the duct behind the clutch pedal to keep it from popping back up.

Now you can look up at the brake pedal mechanism. It has two switches on it -- one that disconnects the cruise control, and the other that lights the brake lights when the pedal moves. The brake light switch is simpler, with two red wires on it. There's also a SPRING that pulls the pedal up.

It's really cramped and hard to reach around in there, but you should be able to see what is causing your problem. It's either something preventing the pedal from moving back up, or else the spring has worn out and you'll need to replace it with a stronger one. Make sure the switches aren't damaged or out of position. The brakelight switch itself could be broken. (Coincidentally, mine just failed this week and I'll be writing about it here next week!)

I'm sure whatever you find wrong will be relatively easy to repair or replace, once you get to it. Good luck!
